Professional Learning to Advance PBL Instruction

In these advanced professional learning courses, our expert instructors will help your team deepen their understanding of how to facilitate Gold Standard Project-Based Learning (PBL) in the classroom.

Advanced PBL Leadership Cohort

Format: Over the course of 8–10 flexibly scheduled weeks, up to 5 educators will participate in 3 virtual/synchronous coaching sessions and complete 6 Defined Micro-Credentials. Each session will last up to 2 hours.

Participants: Ideal for educators wanting to go deeper with Defined Learning and PBL.

The Advanced PBL Leadership Cohort provides teachers who have completed the foundational PBL Leadership Cohort with a deeper learning experience that includes time with and the support of a Defined Coach to improve teaching practices. Through self, peer, and mentor reflections, the cohort participants will further advance PBL teaching and learning while demonstrating competence through the completion of six Defined Micro-Credentials.


Defined Learning: HQPBL Leadership Cohort

Format: Over the course of 8–10 flexibly scheduled weeks, up to 12 educators will participate in 4 virtual Cohort meetings. Each meeting will last up to 2 hours.

Participants: Ideal for educators wanting to go deeper with Defined Learning and PBL.

Prerequisite: Participants must have previously gone through the PBL Leadership Cohort.

The Defined Learning: High-Quality Project-Based Learning (HQPBL) Leadership Cohort is designed to leverage the HQPBL framework to shift and strengthen teaching practices. The HQPBL framework is used to describe the student experience in project-based learning and the skills they will develop. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to earn three Defined Micro-Credentials.

HQPBL Leadership Workshop

Format: 3-Day in-person workshop

Participants: Teachers and Instructional Coaches who have experience implementing Defined Learning performance tasks; Administrators accompanying their team are welcome as well.

Prerequisite: Participants must have previously gone through the PBL Leadership Cohort.

The Defined Learning: High-Quality Project-Based Learning (HQPBL) Leadership Workshop is designed to leverage the HQPBL framework to shift and strengthen teaching practices. The HQPBL framework is used to describe the student experience in project-based learning and the skills they will develop. Additionally, participants will earn three Defined Micro-Credentials and a PBL Champion certificate of achievement for 25 PD hours.

  • Follow-up includes 2 virtual support sessions:
  • Support Session 1: 1 month after In-Person Workshop (1 hour)
  • Support Session 2: 2 months after In-Person Workshop (1 hour)

Defined Learning: SEL Leadership Cohort

Format: Over the course of 8–10 flexibly scheduled weeks, up to 12 educators will participate in 3 virtual Cohort meetings. Each meeting will last up to 2 hours.

Participants: Ideal for those wanting to go deeper with Defined Learning and PBL.

Prerequisite: Participation in the Defined Learning: PBL Leadership Cohort is a prerequisite.

The Defined Learning: Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) Leadership Cohort will help members develop an understanding of how social and emotional skills are focused and improved upon through immersion in a Defined Learning performance task. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and build consensus around social and emotional competencies while developing a deeper understanding of implementing a performance task to enhance desired or needed social and emotional skills. Additionally, participants will earn three Defined Micro-Credentials including.
